When I look back on the days before I gave up alcohol, it feels like a heavy burden weighing down on me. The parties that once brought me excitement now seem like distractions from deeper issues in my life. My transformation began when I hit rock bottom at 30, losing my job and the self-respect I had once held dear. That low moment led me to realize that if I wanted to change my life, I had to take charge.
One night in a summer of 2024, I found myself staring at the ceiling, reflecting on 15 years spent drowning my emotions in drugs & alcohol. I was stuck in a vicious cycle of brief highs followed by crushing lows. It was in that moment of despair that I resolved to make a change.
The Downfall: Excessive Partying and Losing Control
My Journey Through Excessive Partying
I partied not only every weekend but daily, due to distractions of a deeper issue. For me, excessive partying was not just a phase; it was a lifestyle I embraced. Each weekend brought a new opportunity to indulge, and the glamour of nightlife masked my descent into chaos. But underneath the flashy exterior, I was barely functioning.
Realizations About Lifestyle and Family Relationships
I realized how my lifestyle has affected my relationship with my family; there wasn't any unity. Healing my relationship with my father was a key moment that opened the door to inner child healing. This was a private topic I had internally that would always manage to come out when I would be high or drunk, and I finally decided to fix it.
The effects of my partying began to show. Studies suggest that binge drinking can increase the risk of anxiety and depression by up to 25%. My work performance suffered, and relationships with colleagues strained. The final wake-up call came when I lost my job after failing to meet basic responsibilities. This was the shattering moment that forced me to confront the damage I had ignored for so long.
My Journey to Self-Mastery
My hunt for a better life has always been there, but there's a journey to self-mastery. Back in 2020, I chose to enter a mentorship program and started a business which didn't work out due to not having the proper mindset and discipline. I fell back into addictions and alcohol. Now that I look back, I realize I wanted to work so much on the superficial gains of wealth but neglected the hurting child within me, screaming for help. You can't start anything of substance on a crumbling foundation. At that critical juncture, I faced a choice: continue down the dark path or take control and build a brighter future.
However, identifying the problem was just the first step. The real challenge was addressing my past and doing the inner work needed for lasting change. The mentorship provided valuable insights, but I was unprepared for the heavy emotional lifting that lay ahead.
The Shift: From Choosing to Deciding
Upon reflection, I discovered an important difference between "choosing" and "deciding." In 2020, I chose to improve my life. I chose to stop feeding the addiction that had controlled me. However, it wasn’t until 2024 that I made a firm decision to commit to sobriety.
This distinction is significant. Choosing is often passive; it’s easy to express a desire without commitment. Deciding requires action and dedication. I committed to rediscovering a life without alcohol. From that moment, I developed the discipline necessary to stay on this path.
The Power of Mentorship and Community
I’ve always believed in God, even though I didn’t feel I had a direct line of communication with Him. But in 2024, that began to change. I opened up to something greater than myself—and for the first time, I truly began to listen. It’s funny how life works. When my dear friend Yamillee tried to share how scripture helped her, I wasn’t ready to receive it. But now, I understand. Prayer became my haven—a sacred space where I could release my fears and begin to make peace with my past. It became a lifeline, nourishing every part of my being and grounding me like an anchor in the middle of life’s storms.
Podcasts also played a significant role in my journey, especially The Secret to Success featuring CJ, Quincey, Eric Thomas, Jessica Lundy, and others. One episode that deeply resonated with me was "Built in the Fire: Stories of Grit, Faith & Ultimate Transformation".
Their raw, honest conversations about overcoming adversity and taking ownership of one’s life became a powerful source of inspiration. I often listened while jogging or reflecting on my day—letting their stories of grit and growth fuel my own motivation.
These candid moments reminded me that resilience is often born through struggle. Their voices became a steady reminder that pain can be purposeful, and that transformation is always possible when we face our past with courage and choose to move forward with faith.
The Path Forward: Establishing Discipline
With clarity in my heart, I began to adopt habits that aligned with my sobriety goals. I realized that simply quitting alcohol was not enough; I needed to fill that gap with healthier alternatives.
I started exercising regularly, spending time outdoors, and engaging in creative activities that inspired me. These meaningful pursuits shifted my focus, allowing me to replace the need for numbing with opportunities for growth and fulfillment.
Practical Steps for Those Considering Sobriety
If you are at a crossroads and thinking about changing your relationship with alcohol, consider these actionable steps:
Seek Support: Whether it’s a formal program or an informal mentor, finding someone to lean on can significantly help your journey.
Engage in Self-Reflection: Journaling or meditating can clarify your personal relationship with alcohol and identify your triggers and motivations.
Build a Supportive Routine: Fill your daily schedule with positive habits—exercise, creative outlets, and mindfulness practices to keep you engaged and uplifted.
Consume Uplifting Content: Dive into podcasts, books, and talks that motivate and inspire you. Surrounding yourself with positivity is essential.
Embrace Faith or Spirituality: For many, including myself, exploring spiritual beliefs or praying provides crucial support for healing and personal growth.
Reflecting on My Journey: Regaining Control
As I progressed on my sobriety journey, life regained vibrancy. I began to appreciate life’s simple joys—a hot cup of coffee, laughter shared with family, or the peace of the outdoors.
It’s incredible to reflect on my journey from despair to fulfillment. Now, I navigate life with purpose, guided by discipline, faith, and a supportive community. I now see the critical importance of transforming a choice into a decisive action and holding myself accountable at every step.
A Brighter Future Awaits
As I look back on my path from darkness to light, I see the remarkable changes I have made. Alcohol, which once seemed like a refuge, is now a distant memory. My past experiences are valuable lessons that guide me to live authentically and intentionally.
This journey is an ongoing process, one that demands my vigilance and commitment. But I assure you, by taking that first step, seeking improvement, and choosing to embrace change, I unlocked a life filled with deep meaning and purpose.
If you find yourself facing similar challenges, remember that you are never alone in this battle. Healing is possible, and only you can start that transformation. With faith, support, and dedication, the path to recovery can lead you from darkness into a life abundant with light.

Along the way, I found comfort in knowing I wasn’t alone. Heres a few songs in particular that spoke to my heart and reminded me that others have walked through similar darkness—and come out stronger:
These voices, just like the people and prayers that guided me, became part of my healing soundtrack.
💫 If you're on your own path of transformation—or simply need a reminder that healing is possible—this story is for you.
